...I was still single, not loving, but fabulous nonetheless. I wondered what would happen to our friendship. Would we lose touch as had been the case with others, or would we keep to our weekly coffee dates?

Empowerment can be painful, but stepping into your own worth is priceless.
by Dr. Blue Craig Maybe it’s natural to become nostalgic while relocating. Regardless of how fast you seek to flee your current dwelling, most of us experience some type of emotional stirring surrounding our pilgrimage to a new land. As we celebrate women this month, I am excited to feature guest bloggers who are empowered women causing ripple effects of good in this world! This week's post is by my dear friend, Sawsan Werfelli. I have never shared my story, nor have I written a personal account of it. I am the kind of person that believes everything in our lives happens for a reason, regardless of whether or not we are aware of that reason. It is certainly true for me, in looking back at my life.

I was awaken one morning by the voice of Joel Osteen on television, preaching about the Prophet Amos, and saying something about receiving blessings so quickly that it would make your head spin. I was intrigued because it spoke to my spirit as I made the connection to my own personal experience. I sat up to listen more intently, and it all came together for me in an instant. Joel Osteen continuously spoke about the God of Acceleration, and how we are amidst a season where He would begin to speed things up. That promotion, better finances, or an illness you thought would take some time to heal, would all change so quickly that it will make your head spin! “She woke up every morning with the option of being anyone she wished. How beautiful it was that she always chose herself.” ~Tyler Kent White
I should preface this by saying that I think Beyoncé is fierce. Her body is fierce. Her singing is fierce. Her dancing is fierce, and her video for “Formation” is fierce. But this song does not speak for me. Maybe it’s because I did not grow up down south, nor did my parents. Maybe it’s because I do not carry hot sauce in my “bag swag.” Maybe it’s because I never rock Givenchy – it is too expensive. I appreciate that Beyoncé empowers herself with her latest release. But this song does not speak for me. Dear Woman, please remember your worth. It is not enough to simply know that you are deserving of love and respect - you have to actually believe it. If you consistently celebrate and honor all that makes you unique and special, others will pay you homage as well, following your lead.
Doing Less For More
by Monica Evans I can't hate on my body while expecting it to be healthy... The New Year is a great time to reflect on past resolutions. Healthy living has always been a personal goal of mine, and I’ve made some pretty important gains towards a better lifestyle. In 2011, I joined Black Girls Run, a group dedicated to the encouragement of African-American women seeking to make fitness a priority. By 2012, I was running half marathons, which ultimately led to me running my first full marathon. I was living the life I had wanted, while challenging myself to accomplish my goals! I lost weight and looked great; but in the back of my mind, I wondered if this was sustainable. Would I be able to continue to progress at this pace? Did I even want to? |
