Beautiful. Black. Woman.

“I am deliberate, and afraid of nothing.” ~Audre Lorde

I spent most of my weekend empowering, and being empowered by, black women. While my clientele is diverse, the coaching sessions and back to back vision board events I facilitated kept me in spaces filled with women of color. This does not happen very often, and when it does, I am immediately recharged. Being in a room full of women of color is a magical experience. I am so proud to be black.
What was even more re-energizing were the stories told, the connections forged, and the visions created on poster boards. I can’t describe it; the bonds of sisterhood amongst black women are palpable, enduring, and true. I imagine that this is what it felt like to be home on the Motherland with our tribe, caring for our village, caring for each other. There is nothing more rewarding and familiar than being surrounded by women of color. Our varying shades of black and brown blend with great strength and boldness and divinity.

I returned home in the evenings wanting to dance. Wanting to move my body. Wanting to perform rituals and write about the beautiful black woman. We are powerful, indeed. Our resilience is matched by our deep consideration for others, considerations that too often come at our own expense. But hasn’t that always been the case? Our enslaved ancestors worked from dusk until dawn tending the land, their families, and the families of slave owners. It is no wonder black women carry much burden. It is embedded in our DNA, expected of us to this very day. That is why to love a black woman, and to experience the love of a black woman, is awe-inspiring. We too require the nurture, the devotion, and the loyalty that we are always prepared to give; and when it is reciprocated, the love we offer has the capacity to transform and transcend.

To black women everywhere – I love you. I love everything about you. I love that the passion in our hearts is what keeps us in motion, even when we are tired; that we cry as hard as we laugh because such intensity runs through our veins; that we always overcome because it is what we were taught by the example of our loved ones, and that we continue to strive to create a better world for our kin. We know what it means to be in community, which is why sister circles are so enriching. Our shared identity makes me tremble with gratitude; blessed sister, I appreciate you. I wish for you and for me a life filled with abundance, and a love that we deserve. A love that is only right and fitting for a Queen.
