“For what shall it profit a man or a woman, to gain the whole world and lose their own Soul?” Mark 8:36

A friend introduced me to the acronym “JOMO,” which stands for “joy of missing out.” It is the antithesis to "FOMO," or, “fear of missing out.” FOMO can manifest in our lives as fear of missing out on some big event, or gossip, or whatever is happening down the street with the neighbors, not being included, or feeling isolated and out of the loop. Meanwhile, JOMO can manifest as the joy of not caring about any of these things, while leisurely indulging in solitude, and not needing to be the first to know everything.
We live in a culture where things happen fast, and there is a fear of missing out on what happens next. We must stay ahead of the curve and plan for what is most likely, as we strive to be the best and not be caught unaware. We are constantly on guard for the sake of maintaining control. We have become slaves to illusions of perfection and security, finding it difficult to experience bliss and serenity. And when we do get a rare glimpse of bliss and serenity, it never lasts long because of fear that the other shoe might drop.

There is nothing appealing about living this way. When we become too focused on the hustle of life, we lose focus on living the flow of life. People (including the author of this blog) get so caught up in ego concerns that our hearts end up being neglected. Joy feels like a foreign concept, while real pleasure is fleeting. We keep up the status quo that protects the ego, while our soul slowly withers, leaving nothing but a shallow life. I don't know about you, but I would choose a joyous existence over a fearful one any day. In fact, we will all be challenged to do so as we move through a Virgo charged week!

The Sun, Mercury and Mars (and soon Venus) are traveling through the sign of the Virgin, a sign that needs purity and organization, and is known to be grounded and practical. Extreme Virgo, however, can be a highly nervous energy, consistently working to simplify, and be more efficient. It is no wonder that Virgos experience regular anxiety, which often leads them from big picture goals, to small minute criticisms. Since we have so many planets in this sign, there is the danger of over-achieving, over-planning, and over-analyzing. To navigate this energy, we must be extra mindful of how FOMO influences our responses to life. If you feel the need to scrutinize out of fear of missing something, drop into your heart space, and try a little JOMO.

Check your horoscopes to see what’s in store this week ahead, and don’t forget to read for your Ascendant sign, too.
