Lessons on Death and Transformation

In Astrology, the planet Saturn shows us where we face the biggest challenges and obstacles in life. While its sign placement in an astrological birth chart reveals a more specific set of blockages, present day transits of Saturn bring about certain themes that are widespread, experienced by all. The energy of Saturn comes through as a taskmaster telling us where we need to be more disciplined at building firmer foundations that sustain the essence of our core being. Saturn teaches us difficult lessons about reality that can cause serious limitations – though nevertheless, are necessary for our evolution. As the ruler of Capricorn, Saturn is concerned with order and strategy, laying the framework to construct a master plan, one that is practical and long lasting. Suffice it to say, without Saturn, nothing in our lives would ever stick or become permanent.
Since October of 2009, Saturn has been moving through the sign of Libra the Scales. Libra rules the 7th House in Astrology, that of partnership and marriage as well as fairness and equality. At the heart of Libra is an insatiable need to find balance. Thus, our ability to compromise has been tested as a result of Saturn’s transit through this area of the Zodiac. We’ve all witnessed many tipping points play out on a global scale with a call for justice in a society of one too many extremes: rich vs. poor; life vs. choice; democrat vs. republican. We’ve also had to work out those contending dynamics found within our own personal struggles, especially in our most significant relationships with family, colleagues and romantic partners. These external and internal conflicts left us no choice but to erect boundaries that benefited all. In fact, this has been the overall message of Saturn in Libra: to master the art of diplomacy finding that middle ground between us and them – I and we.

On October 6th 2012, Saturn will complete its tour of Libra leaving a permanent imprint that’ll forever change our attitudes towards what is required to maintain enduring unity. This will also be a welcomed reprieve to you Libra Suns out there who have been tested the most. Up next on Saturn’s agenda is a transit through the sign of Scorpio, where the planet will remain from this October to 2015. A call for synergy will be a continuing theme, but this time on a subterranean level. The energy of Scorpio is regenerative, and as I’ve said time and time again, this sign finds pleasure in plunging the depths of any person, topic or situation in order to expose and release all that is hidden for the sake of transformation. This is actually the primary function of Scorpio, and the only way to fully transcend is through deep and profound experiences, namely death.

The manifestations of Saturn in the sign of Scorpio will mobilize us to thoroughly examine the authoritarian dynamics found within our systems of governance and administration, as well as our own private desires for dominance and control. The investigation will be intruding, bringing to light all that has been concealed and kept in the dark. Inevitably, we will feel exposed and vulnerable, either in the public light or in our close and intimate associations. This is where Saturn comes in to replenish our everyday realities with a deepening strength and determination to mend all that is broken. We are now in the midst of this experience as Pluto moves through the sign of Capricorn (a gradual but strong mutual reception to Saturn in Scorpio). In the end, something must die in order to evoke an unyielding spirit of renewal. During this transit of Saturn, we will all at one point experience a certain “death” that leads to resurrection on a soul level.
