On Life, And Death

2/2/2020

I had every intention of writing a blog and sending out my newsletter last week. But then, I found out with the rest of the world that Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna, died in a private plane crash that killed seven other people.
When I heard the news, I fell ill and sick to my stomach. Kobe was just a couple years older than me. Our high school basketball teams played each other in the 90s; I had no idea at the time that while cheering for Norristown High School, the Kobe Bryant was our opponent.

I couldn’t believe what happened, and of course, my thoughts went immediately to his wife who lost a husband and child. Kobe was so young; Gianna, even younger. I couldn’t help but to think about my life at age 38, and the fact that tomorrow is never promised.

In his song, “Show Me,” John Legend sings: “When people go, why do they go? Why don’t you choose me?” Every time I hear these lyrics, I weep. I recalled them last weekend wondering why I was so blessed to be alive, and why Kobe and Gianna had to die.

In processing, a friend shared that in her own prayers, she came to accept that we may never know what is “written vs. random.” I personally don’t believe death is ever random, and, it’s morbid to think that it is written. But alas, everyone dies.

So please, live today.

Be present today. Be grateful for little things, such as family arriving safely to their destinations. Say a prayer for those directly and indirectly impacted by Kobe’s death. Say a prayer for everyone – say a prayer for the world – because tomorrow is never promised.

Check your weekly horoscopes to see what’s in store this week ahead, and don’t forget to read for your Ascendant sign too.
