Quit Shaming Your Joy

When I asked my client how she was doing, she responded that, while she felt bad about it, she was doing really well. In fact, I believe the exact word she used was “thriving” – she had been thriving in the midst of so much loss in our world.
I immediately congratulated and invited her to celebrate how well she’d been doing in spite of this challenging year. You gotta love up on the good shit, folks; life is not always easy. We do ourselves (and others) a disservice by shaming away our joy.

How many of you are guilty of saying, “things could be worse,” when asked how you’re doing? How many of you immediately try to clean up the complaints you have about life, or avoid complaining in general, because, well, things could be worse? If that’s you, I give you permission to stop comparing your struggles.

Yes, life could be worse for many of us. But if not, it’s OK for you to be grateful and rejoice in that. It’s also OK for you to express sentiments around what is not going well for you in life without inserting the caveat, "but it could be worse."

Comparing struggles is dangerous. Some of us are responsible for our own struggles and some of us struggle due to circumstances beyond our control. Some of us are really good at overcoming struggle while some of us struggle to overcome. No matter your experience, one thing that we all share is struggle.

So instead of beating yourself up for doing well or beating yourself up for complaining when life could be worse, just be where you are. Don’t compare. Don’t hide your joy. Don’t let guilt keep you from throwing your fists up in the air. Just be where you are. Let others be where they are and maybe then we can all just be there for each other.

OMG! This really resonated with me. Although our family has felt the affects of COVID, we have been thriving in the form of better health, promotions, new jobs, etc. I've thanked God privately but have felt guilty about expressing His blessings on my family in the midst of this chaos. Yes, we have still experienced our own issues but I have said "it could be worse" and you are right, we do need to stop doing that.

It brings me joy and hope to know that others are finding light! Finding joy during such hard times feels like an act of love.
