Spiritual Burnout

11/3/2019

I have a client who uses several different spiritual tools and practices to stay grounded, centered, and to promote mental health and wellness.
She does yoga, meditation, uses Florida water, burns sage and Palo Santo wood, states gratitude daily, keeps a dream journal, and the list continues.

Her Virgo influence makes her a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to her spiritual practice; she wants to use each tool effectively and efficiently. She wants to get it right.

She is committed to her rituals, cultivating tools that she can use whenever needed. But sometimes, my client admitted, nothing seems to “stick” for her in the long run.

Her spiritual well doesn’t stay as full as she would like, which leads her to crave greater grounding and centering. She often feels like what she does isn’t enough, and thus, piles on more.

In doing so, she may have inadvertently created a spiritual routine that actually fails to feed her soul. She still feels exhausted by the end of the day, carrying a lot of anxiety in her body.

Because spirituality is so trendy and mainstream these days, I think we each suffer in one way or another from spiritual burnout.

We want so desperately to keep up with our routines and know the language of spirituality that we rarely pay attention to the impact; we can't be sure if our practices even feed us!

The concept of “spirituality” predates all of mankind. The spirit of Source, Energy, God, Universe, etc. is around us, deep within us and has always been.

To connect to it takes daily practice; not just in the morning or at night, and not just through meditation or yoga. Your spiritual practice must be all encompassing.

Spirituality is kindness. Spirituality is our attitude. Spirituality is our mindset. Spirituality is compassion. Spirituality is courage and vulnerability. Spirituality is a way of life.

I don’t care if you do Reiki or pull Tarot cards. How do you respond to life’s challenges? How do you navigate uncomfortable emotions?

How do you deal with negativity in the world? How do you give yourself permission to experience joy? How do you treat others? How have you integrated spirituality into the fiber of your being?

Spirituality is a muscle that requires regular use in order for us to be spiritually healthy; how do you know if it’s working?

One way to know is to look at the state of your relationships. Also, how is your health? Also, how do you feel?

Whatever your choice of spiritual exercise (astrology, writing, physical fitness, etc.), you must know and understand the choice of spiritual practice, while being intentional and consistent.

Living in times that pull on all our complexities beg the need for us to pay attention to those practices that do, in fact, feed our soul and inspire us to be the best version of self.

Whatever that practice is, keep it up. Commit to it. If it works, great. If not, that’s OK and you can discard it. If you want to incorporate something new, fine.

Just remember that the purpose of any spiritual practice is not to get it right or become an influencer. The purpose is to feel connected to your spirit. To simply live and be happy.

Check your horoscopes to see what’s in store this week ahead, and don’t forget to read for your Ascendant sign too.
